Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American performer and actress. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress and performer. Queen Latifah is an Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer and Rita, a teacher of Irvington High School. Her father and mother divorced when Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic high school located in Newark New Jersey. Latifah was her stage name when she reached the age of eight. It means very delicate in Arabic. Always tall, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward for her basketball team in high school. in a school show, she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah was a beatboxer in the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah is among the first participants of Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective of MCs around DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to the host of Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
